Choosing your short trek
Which is the best short trek from Pokhara? If you have less than a week, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, and the Ghandruk loop are the top contenders. They all start close to Pokhara and require ACAP permits, but they offer completely different experiences.
Your choice depends on your fitness level, how high you want to go, and whether you prefer cultural village encounters or rugged alpine ridges.
Poon Hill: The classic sunrise trek
Poon Hill is a 4-day loop reaching 3,210m. It is famous for its panoramic sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trail passes through dense rhododendron forests and large, well-established Gurung and Magar villages.
Pros: Excellent infrastructure, moderate altitude, iconic views. Cons: Very busy in peak season, involves thousands of steep stone stairs. Best for: First-time trekkers and those wanting comfortable teahouses.
Mardi Himal: The alpine ridge
Mardi Himal takes 5 to 7 days and climbs rapidly to a high ridge at 4,450m. It offers incredibly close, dramatic views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. The trail is quieter and more rugged than Poon Hill.
Pros: Stunning close-up mountain views, less crowded, adventurous feel. Cons: Steep climbs, higher altitude risk, basic lodge facilities. Best for: Fitter trekkers looking for an alpine experience without a long approach.
Ghandruk Loop: Culture and comfort
The Ghandruk trek is a short 2 to 3-day hike reaching about 2,000m. Ghandruk is a beautiful traditional Gurung village with slate-roofed houses and excellent views of Annapurna South.
Pros: Low altitude (no AMS risk), culturally rich, very comfortable lodges, shortest time commitment. Cons: Lower elevation means views are not as expansive as Poon Hill or Mardi. Best for: Families, beginners, or those short on time.
